It is a form of treatment whereby the dog swims under a carefully monitored exercise regime. It may or may not include the use of swim jets to increase water flow and thus resistance. It should be supervised at all times by a suitably qualified person. Is it only possible if referred by my vet? Many clients come to us because their vet has recommended hydrotherapy for their dog's condition. However, it's not mandatory. In some of our cases the client asked their vet whether dog swimming would be a good idea. Don't hesitate to ask your vet or us for advice. So my dog can come for hydrotherapy without a referral? Yes - but we will of course contact your vet to ensure that we understand your dog's condition and fitness level. We can then offer a treatment programme tailored to your dog's needs. Can I swim my dog on my own? No - supervision is essential for two reasons. Firstly to ensure to ensure the hydrotherapy treatment is monitored and progress is recorded. Secondly to ensure that fully qualified staff are on hand in case of any difficulties. Can I swim with my dog? In many cases it is not necessary or appropriate. For some dogs it would be so unusual to see their owner in the water with them it may cause them distress and thus hinder the programme. However, we do allow it and especially in those instances where it helps the dog relax and enjoy the hydrotherapy. How often should I come? It depends on your dog's condition and fitness level. From experience we find that in the early stages twice per week is needed. As the response to hydrotherapy improves along with your dog' general fitness level then only once per week may suffice. What breeds of dog can have hydrotherapy? All breeds! Our pool is especially designed to accommodate all sizes of dog from the smallest toy dogs to great danes and newfoundlands. What are the most common symptoms you treat? 1.
Hip Dysplasia How long is each session? Each session is up to 30 minutes in the hydrotherapy pool - although as mentioned elsewhere in the early stages your dog may only swim for a much shorter period until fitness improves. An additional 30 minutes - for use of the drying room and facilities - is also included. Will the chlorine harm my dog? No - chlorine is used in all human swimming pools because it is the most effective method of ensuring the water is free from germs and bacteria. Canine hydrotherapy pools in the USA have used chlorine safely for over 15 years. What time and days are available? The pool is open seven days per week and also some evenings. · What does it cost? A session is £12 for weekdays and £14 evenings/weekends (plus VAT). For a block booking of ten sessions number eleven is free! What results will I see? Feedback from the owner is essential in gauging the progress being made. Generally though you will see fitness improve, lameness reduce and well being improve - and a long nap after each swim! Is it suitable for older dogs? Very much so - it can lead to a new "lease of life" if well managed. |
